SERMON SERIES: Can I Get A Witness?

Most Christians rarely share their faith in Jesus Christ with other persons-especially person who are not followers of Jesus Christ.  And yet this is our central task…Yet there are pockets of churches, denominational and non-denominational, that are growing significantly and effecting their communities.  These churches grow and affect their communities because they have defined practiced evangelism over the last five or more generation.  These churches understand evangelism as connecting persons to God through Jesus Christ in a vital, dynamic, personal relationship of faith.  Evangelism is about building authentic relationships with people we don’t know.  Instead of waiting for people to come to us.  (Excerpts from Get Their NAME, Grow Your Church by Building New Relationships)

We are made in God’s image and are meant to be creators of life and hope, not the consumers of our culture’s shiny gods. We have the ability to change the world and create a legacy that will live forever in the lives of generations to follow. That legacy starts when each of us takes the hard steps being managers of our time, talent, money, and service. Devoted followers of Christ must be intentional about fulfilling the discipline and the call to generosity that God has placed in all of us.  The goal of this sermon series and annual program is not to make you feel guilty, nor is it to say that you have to be exactly like this or that person. The goal is for all of us to ask questions of ourselves and be open to the possibility that God will lead us in new directions in our lives.     Adapted from “First” by Michael Slaughter

December 01  - December 29, 2013
The Advent and Christmas seasons are high holy seasons in the life of Christian believers and of the Church.  The miracle of God’s love arriving among humanity in Christ is at the center of the holiday seasons.  People walking in darkness without the presence of God, without the love of God could now know God personally through His Son, Jesus Christ. This miraculous birth is what Christmas is all about. It’s true that the traditions of Christmas, the tree, gifts, time with friends and family is a wonderful part of Christmas, but the true meaning of Christmas is found in Jesus.

People often skim over the surface of many things – but when we’re ALL IN, we’re invested, we’re invited, we’re experiencing connection on the deepest levels. ALL IN is the invitation for each of us to find the roots of life sinking in deeper to the story God is writing in us and through us as a community. Wisdom on handling our resources, finances, talents & giftings are available to any who take on the challenge to being ALL IN. This sermon series will the use the baptismal, confirmation, and membership vows of the United Methodist Church to remind the hearers that God expects unconditional surrender are that we are ALL IN. Once we are ALL IN promises are made, a metamorphosis takes place that changes a person into a new creation and creature. . The ALL IN premise provides a theological framework for what it means to follow Christ totally and the consequential changes it makes in a person’s life.

Acts of piety and acts of mercy, and taught that both are essential to our life in Christ.  In Wesley’s model, acts of piety had to do with the practices of prayer, worship, receiving the sacraments, fasting, and belonging to a society of Christians holding one another accountable for our growth in the knowledge and love of God.  Acts of mercy are ministries of compassion, service, and justice that relieve suffering, feed the hungry, visit the imprisoned, and heal the sick. These we do in obedience to Christ. We serve others for the purposes of Christ. Sometimes we act as if our living in Christ and leading the church requires us to emphasize piety to the exclusion of mercy or to choose ministries of mercy at the expense of congregational vitality.  This sermon series will combine help us reclaim the roots of the Church to service and live our faith daily.

Summer is the time when people begin to ask us, “What are your plans this summer?”   So, what are your plans for the summer? Will you be traveling? Or will you be embarking on the most beautiful travel plan of all, the one in which you vacation close to home? May I suggest that you take a summer, Staycation with St. Andrew?  The SAUMC Summer Sermon Series (July-August) is titled “Staycation” Staying Close to God.  Summer is the time for relaxation and renewal.  Summer is also a great opportunity to share your faith.  I remind you that “God is with you everywhere you go!”  I am asking St. Andrew members, friends, and neighbors to take a “Flat Pastor Monica photo with you during your summertime fun as a conversation starter for faith sharing.  Maybe you will discover your own conversation starters, while staying close to God, this summer.  We look forward to spending the summer with you.

Spiritual Gifts Unwrapped
This sermon series is about spiritual gifts.  In studying spiritual gifts, we are not trying to solve a problem; we are instead attempting live the great mission to make disciples, grow the church, and mature as Christians.  In essence, we want you to listen to these sermons, take the spiritual gift survey, discover your gifts, match your gifts with the opportunities offered by St. Andrew’s volunteer fair, and  put your spiritual gifts to work for the Lord. My prayer is that God will use this time to ignite many of us as we begin to discover, rediscover, and use the spiritual gifts God.

Ages and Stages
The Ages and Stages of Life: Moving through the Challenges of Childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood and Senior Adulthood.  The messages will be based on episodes from the life of David. King David is a good source for this theme, because the Bible covers events from his entire life-including his childhood, adolescence, adulthood and senior adulthood.  The idea for this series and comes from John Claypool’s book, Stages, the series Rhythms of Life, by Belinda Price  and I want to fully acknowledge their work that inspired this sermon series. The series will point out a few of the growth challenges that each stage of life offers-and give some biblical guidance on how we can meet those challenges.

Theme:  Time and Seasons
The theme for the year is SIMPLICITY.  The ideas for the theme of simplicity have been adapted from Matthew 28:19-20. The Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, and The Simple Church.  The scripture reminds us to “go out and train everyone we meet far and near” in the Christian way of life.   The role of the Church is to teach others how to “practice” all that Christ has “commanded” so that people may live a purposeful and fruitful life.  The goal of this theme is to help people become “designers” of the preferred Christ-centered lives outcomes of their lives.

Enough, Simplicity, and Joy
The scripture reminds us to “go out and train everyone we meet far and near” in the Christian way of life.   The role of the Church is to teach others how to “practice” all that Christ has “commanded” so that people may live a purposeful and fruitful life.  The goal of this theme is to help people become “designers” of the preferred outcomes of their lives.  The goal is to help people focus on relationships and what happens between the next church program, activity, work assignment, task on a to-do list, or next crises, to a place of spiritual growth.

Every year, we say we’re going to cut back, simplify, and have a family Christmas that focuses on the real reason for the season – Jesus. But every year, advertisements beckon, the children plead, and it seems easier just to indulge our wants and whims. Overspending, overeating, materialism, and busyness rob us of our peace and joy and rob Jesus of his rightful role as the center of our celebration.  “What we have done is taken Christmas and abandoned the whole reason for Jesus’ birth. We’ve professed an alliance to Jesus, but we’ve made Christmas a hedonistic feast of gluttony instead of a sacrificial giving of ourselves with Jesus for the life of the world.”  This Christmas, cut through the hype that leaves you exhausted and broke at the end of the year. Instead, experience the peace of knowing that God is truly with us, the joy of giving sacrificially, and the love of a Savior who gave everything he had for us.. The D.R.I.V.E. Principles - Momentum for Life
What drives you? “You cannot get where you want to be in your faith influence, relationship, vocation, or physical-emotional health if you are not moving forward.  From priest to presidents the landscape is littered with the corpse of talented people who failed to maintain the positive momentum of character development.  Many people start with dreams of walking closely with God and making a difference as a Christian believer and suddenly life gets in the way.  We get discourage when life does not follow our exacting plans and failures begin to add up. This series is designed to help us to develop or reclaim the DRIVE, forward movement, and see that we all hLuke 4:18-21ave a promised future beginning today!”    Michael Slaughter – Momentum for Life

Roll out the red carpet” refers to carpets and rugs used as a sign of welcome. The strip of red carpeting laid out for arrivals and departures.  The red color served to identify the home of royalty,  and luxurious textiles not only provided the comforts of home but also symbolically reminded family, visitors,  and guest that they were entering a place of safety.  Today we say “Roll out the red carpet” or “the red-carpet treatment” to indicate the conferring of honor and prestige.”  It is our honest desire to want anyone that walks on the carpet to truly become a part of the community or home.

STICKY FAITH

The goal of this movement is to help people stay committed and mature in their faith.  The Sticky Faith movement targets youth, young adults, and adults.  Sticky Faith is both internalized and externalized: a faith that is part of an individual’s inner thoughts and emotions, and is also externalized in choices and actions that reflect that faith commitment.  The series will focus on hospitality, regular attendance in a church/campus group, prayer and Bible reading, service to others, and generosity.  Sticky Faith is both personal and communal:  a faith that celebrates God’s specific care for each person while always locating faith in the global and local community of the Church.  Sticky Faith that is both mature and maturing:  a faith that shows marks of spiritual maturity but is also in process of growth.  We are all in process of deepening and growing in our faith.

LOUDER THAN BEFORE!
St. Andrew will focus on “witnessing” and “faith sharing” during the months of May and June. The season of Easter is a time of celebration, faith sharing, personal testimony, and evangelism. St. Andrew will use the seven Sundays of Easter to explore faith in action through evangelism. The Easter Season extends to Pentecost Sunday, May 27, 2012. According Webster Dictionary witnessing or witnesses is defined “something serving as evidence, proof, or a sign: the public affirmation by word or example of faith or conviction.” The Christian believer or the Church is God’s evidence, sign, and proof in the world.  We are to make a positive difference in the world and live as examples of God’s love and power everyday.

March-April 2012
The Lenten sermon series will focus on “transitions” and “change.”   Lent is marked by a time of prayer and preparation to celebrate saving work of Jesus Christ or Easter. The season of Lent at St. Andrew includes Holy WeekEaster, Confirmation, and extends to Pentecost. St. Andrew will use the 40 days of Lent for introspection, self examination, and repentance as an opportunity to teach a spiritual approach to “transition or  “making changes”.  The basic definition of transition is a “passage from one state or stage to another.”  Some of these transitions are driven by time, others by experience. Our children grow up, our bodies change with age, and how we prioritize our lives changes with the passage of time.

November-December 2011
The themes for November and December 2011 is  ”The Good News”  (It’s Time For Some…)  The last eight weeks of  the year 2011 will focus on the phrase “good news” or  gospel which means glad tidings.  The world gospel occurs four times in the first chapter of the book of Romans.  The word gospel can be found in the New Testament 60 – 75 times in the writings of Paul.  The “good news” is the business and the passion of the church past, present, and future.  Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas and the New Year must be a time to boldly name, claim,  and reclaim the “good news” because “it’s time for some.”
